United Way Perth-Huron responds to challenges facing local businesses due to “very dumb” tariffs

In light of the challenges facing local companies due to tariffs, United Way Perth-Huron (UWPH) announced that it is here to help navigate these uncertain times in a press release on March 5.

“Our community is facing the potential of very tough times ahead,” said UWPH Executive Director Ryan Erb. “We want local companies to know that, just as they have been there supporting United Way over many years, we’ll be there for them.”

UWPH offers a variety of resources to employees facing slowdowns and layoffs:

  • The 211 helpline is available 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week to help people find the local supports and services they need.
  • UWPH’s Urgent Needs Fund helps with immediate expenses, including emergency car repairs, groceries, and rent arrears.
  • Mental health and well-being are also critical during stressful times and UWPH is committed to helping provide access to important supports and services.

United Way has always been committed to the well-being of our community,” added Erb. “We stand with local companies and willingly offer our support to help ease the stress. Please let us know if your organization would like more information about local services, or if you would like us to make a presentation or attend staff meetings. Together, we will navigate these challenges and emerge even stronger.”

According to economists, Canada sends 75% of all its exports to the United States, and a recession is feared if these blanket tariffs are prolonged.

In an announcement Trudeau made on March 4, he noted Americans would suffer as well, given how close knit the economies of both countries are. He referred to a Wall Street Journal editorial that said Trump would incite “the dumbest trade war in history” with these tariffs.

“It’s not in my habit to agree with the Wall Street Journal, but Donald, they point out that even though you’re a very smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do,” said Trudeau.

Despite Trump’s ridiculous and uninformed claim that Trudeau “is trying to use this issue to stay in power.” During an childcare announcement in Ottawa Trudeau said that he “look(s) forward to a transition to my duly elected successor in in the coming days or week.”

The Liberal Party chooses its new leader on Sunday and Trudeau will step down as prime minister shortly after that.
