Rounding out the top 10 podcasts with honours

The following five podcasts have also been getting a lot of plays, and they round out the top 10 most popular episodes of the Woodstein Media Podcast.

MVLL CRIMES is a London, Ontario-based band whose music and attitude have been kicking people’s asses around this province, and they are now spreading their sounds across Canada and soon beyond these borders.

This interview with their singer, Jillian Clair, was held outside the Doors Metal Bar and Taco Place in Hamilton in 2022. It has now become the basis for the sixth most popular podcast. There is a lot of music on this one, mostly from new Ontario bands, so if you are looking for new music to listen to, it may be a great place to find it.

The following podcast, number seven on this list, is also music-focused but stands out from the rest.

On episode 12, Punjabi singer Hira Dhariwal speaks about making changes in his early 50s to follow his passion for music and how he gives back to his community through volunteer work with the Multicultural Association of Perth Huron. His music has been received quite well by audiences worldwide, with millions of listens to his songs on YouTube.

Next is a podcast that has been getting as much love as hate. Several trolls have taken shots at this episode in the comments without even listening to it, which tells you how worthwhile discussing trans rights would be with those people. So, some positive comments and likes towards this one might be helpful.

This episode highlights the work and activism of Celeste Trianon, a trans-feminine jurist and activist. On the legal front, she helps people in Quebec with name and gender marker changes. Across Canada, she has been involved in activism, resisting hatred directed towards the 2SLGBTQIA community, specifically trans, two-spirit and non-binary people.

The ninth podcast on the popularity roster is, for the most part, funny. The opening shots are severe and humorous because Bonez Poley wanted to retract their comment, which sounded almost like it was promoting short-term rentals. But really, fuck those apps and websites that help landlords get rich while much-needed housing is kept off the market.

Episode 16 features Toronto comedian Bonez Poley, who learned their performance chops in the Ontario punk and metal music scenes before crossing over into stand-up.

The final podcast on the top ten was the most interesting for me, partly because I could confront the interview subject in person. It was created quickly after a hometown incident, and partly because the answers given made me laugh. I guess I see it as a case of tripping up ignorance.

On January 31, North Perth Chamber of Commerce Chair Sharon D’Arcy shared a Facebook post on the Chamber page promoting a People’s Party of Canada event, which upset some member businesses and organizations. The PPC and its leader, Maxime Bernier, have a reputation for being racist, misogynistic, and homophobic.

The post was removed on February 2. However, before its removal, D’Arcy sat down with Woodstein Media to discuss the post, the PPC and more.

Honourable mentions go out to the ninth and tenth episodes of the Woodstein Media Podcast, which were narrowly edged out of the top 10.

Episode ten features a discussion with Elza Kephart, director of the feature films Graveyard Alive, Go in the Wilderness, and, most recently, Slaxx. Slaxx is a socially conscious satirical horror-comedy that sharply informs on the evils of fair trade, corporate globalization, and fast fashion.

The ninth episode features a conversation with Sam Tecle about what is meant by the call to defund the police. Tecle works with Success Beyond Limits, a collaborative, youth-led, community-based movement providing youth with holistic support to complete their education and experience success in their lives and Jane and Finch Action Against Poverty, a resident-led grassroots coalition of community residents, activists, workers, organizations working to eliminate poverty. He is also an Associate Professor in the Sociology Department at Toronto Metropolitan University. His research and scholarly work span the areas of Black diaspora Studies, Urban Studies, and Sociology of Education.
